Bobo Sun Disc from Upper Volta.

Height 27 1/4'', Width 19 3/4'', Depth 4 1/4''. Solid wood, quite heavy, with concave space in back for the face and handle on the bottom. Rustic black, white and red design. Incised concentric circles around the eyes. Double insized sun rings around the face. Slightly raised nose and small open mouth. Could be the centerpiece of a collection or stand alone as a modern/primitive accent.

The Bobo tribe live in the interior of West Africa, north of the Ivory Coast and south of Mali. They perform dramatic dance rituals at the start of the spring agricultural season. The masks represent the auspicious presence of natural allies mostly in the form of highly abstracted birds and celestial icons.
