The New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary (2 Vol. Set; Thumb Indexed Edition)
Lesley Brown
Oxford Univ Pr
The New in the title of this hefty dictionary signifies that it replaces rather than revises the The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary, the third edition of which was last reprinted with revised addenda in 1973. While much of this work abridges material that appeared in the second edition of The Oxford English Dictionary, published in 1989, a significant number of the words and meanings are new, and, in many instances, dates and etymologies have been revised or corrected.

Art Through the Ages
Edited by de la Croix
Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich, 1991
No art history student can get through a semester without the twin doorstops of Art Through the Ages. Chronicling the history of art from the earliest known cave paintings to postmodern architecture, as well as most major artists, works, and styles in between, these books are must-haves for those interested in understanding art in context. Both books are surveys, and experts may notice the omission of more esoteric movements and artists. Regardless, these volumes are invaluable references--especially since each edition of this classic improves noticeably in its coverage of non-Western art.

The Encyclopedia of Religions
edited by Mircea Eliade
MacMillan, New York, l987
A full nine years after its appearance in print, the most authoritative multivolume set on world religions is available in electronic format. The CD-ROM version of the 16-volume Encyclopedia of Religion [RBB O 1 87] offers DOS, Macintosh, and Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 versions all on one disc. The DOS version features pull-down menus and a sidebar offering various retrieval capabilities. The accompanying 19-page manual points out, however, that the DOS version does not offer all of the query functions available in the Windows version, such as the ability to retrieve by entry title. Therefore, this review concentrates on the Windows version.

Writing for a Good Cause: The Complete Guide to Crafting Proposals and Other Persuasive Pieces for N
Joseph Barbato, Danielle S. Furlich
Simon & Schuster
Writing for nonprofits is a juggling act. One's job might entail writing grant proposals, newsletters, thank-you notes, case statements, and Web-site material--each for a different boss. The most successful development writers take the time to both experience their causes firsthand (sleep in the shelter, go to rehearsals, visit the wilderness) and cultivate personal relationships with their donors ("people give to people").

The History of Art
Harry N. Abrams, New York, 1997

For thousands of art lovers both amateur and professional, aesthetic life began with Janson, as H.W. Janson's History of Art is often called. In the first edition, published in 1962, Janson spoke to that perennial reader he gently called "the troubled layman." His opening paragraph revealed his sympathy: "Why is this supposed to be art?" he quoted rhetorically. "How often have we heard this question asked--or asked it ourselves, perhaps--in front of one of the strange, disquieting works that we are likely to find nowadays in the museum or art exhibition."
